Getting closer

Today the Arctic showed two of it’s many faces. All morning the sun warmed my back when cycling east towards Alta. I departed from Tromsø with a slight delay due to a short sightseeing tour that Michael gave me. It was fun to see the city again after so many years. This vivid city that is still the port of call for many polar adventures and expeditions. I took the chance and had a photo taken with Amundsen.

image

He was very successful and not only conquered the South Pole but also was the first one to ship the North West Passage from Greenland to Alaska. He was a dedicated person but no great leader as my favourite polar hero Sir Ernest Shackelton. Another story to tell elsewhere.

My cycling today got me much closer to Alta. I did my last ferry trips and got back to the lovely E6 motorway. Keep fingers crossed that it stays as quite as it was today. This road is the only connect to the most northern cities in Norway and therefore heavily used. Until the day after tomorrow I will be bound to this road as there are no real alternatives. I had worse roads to ride.

The trip is getting to an end and I already start to miss this travelling attitude with all the smaller and bigger encounters and events every day. It is so much fun to get to know a country like Norway just by cycling. There is so much more to see. I am already planning for another visit. But this is another story. Let me call it a day for now. See you.

From ferry boat to ferry boat

When I woke up this morning the sky was grey. So I killed my clock and added another 30 minutes of sleep. When I left the campsite it was 8 am. On the first hundreds of meters some motions in the water caught my interest. After a closer observation this turned out to be a hunting otter. I was so lucky to watch him enjoying his fishy meal down below at the seashore.

Cruising through tunnels and carless roads I reached the first ferry boat just in time to spot my dream boat.

image

Some paint and a little bit of fuel and it would be ready for a fishing trip or an marine excursion to one of the many islands in the fjords. When the ferry called for the last passengers I stopped dreaming an followed the crowds. Shortly before I met Luca from Bern. He has just finished his apprenticeship as a landscaper. He started his cycling trip in Bern, went through Germany and Denmark directly to Oslo and than northwards to where we met. We decided to share some time together cycling to Bodø.

image

It is good fun to chat and cycle together. At the end we both saw our first moose. Between the various ferry transfers cycling is quite relaxing. Today the slopes and step increases seem to be off duty. The road was nearly flat from a Norwegian perspective.

And the day ended with a very nice dinner of Spaghetti with herbs, bread and a hot coffee. A quite luxurious finish of this nice day.

Viel Meer.

Score at half time

It took me 14 days to get to Namsos and chances are good that I might reach the North Cape in time. For now this sounds fine with me. The trip from Flakk to Namsos included everything that is typical for this region. Long inlets, steep hills and plenty of Norwegian daily live. I spotted this creative outburst below on the 720 to Malm.

Looks like modern rock painting. Haven’t seen anybody painting it but I am sure it must be an adult male that created this lines.

Another man made thing caught my interest later on at the side of the same road.

image

What looks like a Christo monument is just pure aquaculture. The blue plastic barrels act as buoys for long lines under water that are overgrown by common or blue mussels. But it looks very nice from above.

image

Most of my views were very marine. Fjords and hills or hills and meadows or woods and hills. It was never boring and always interesting to guess and than see what came after the next hilltop.

The day ended at the camping site in Namsos. The number of travelling bicyclist has increased drastically.

One last story for today: Shortly before I got to Namsos I had a collision when I went down a hill. I think we both were shocked by the encounter as I hit him head-on. Still a little shaky it seemed that no major parts were broken when the butterfly headed towards the meadows.

Ready for part two

I am at the Atlantic coast.

image

Tonight I hope to hear the sound of the waves and the sea gulls hovering in the sky. Tomorrow I will be starting my day with my first inner Norwegian ferry trip. It will not be my last.

I am leaving the high mountains behind to face the coastal hills of the Atlantic Coast. So it will not become boring the next two weeks. Today started with some downhills passages on the very busy E6. Just a very few cycling lanes allowed some relaxing rolling.

image

Various times during the day I find myself discussing and evaluating things and events in my mind in English. I have switched into this mode automatically.  But this is just a collateral I am still the same as before. At least nearly the same.

image

For today there are no more wise words to share. As you see from the picture above I am still able to smile. At least when the daily pedalling had been done. Seeing you all soon on this channel.
