Dear all

My tour has come to an end. But donations are still welcome. Any contribution of yours would be of help to the project „Haus Muehlberg“.

For all those that planned to donate for this project, now is the time to remit your amount. Any sum you could give would be welcome.

Thank you in advance for considering a donation.

It was the day after

Having completed my trip to the North Cape yesterday I am now preparing for my travel home. Momentarily I am in Alta waiting for my flight to depart on Sunday morning. Today I mainly walked. It was a completely new experience. I went to the Alta museum which is famous for it’s stone carvings. All is built around the carved rocks allowing the visitors to explore the different smaller sites by foot. This walking experience is a new one. As it is slower than cycling it was even more intensive.

This morning I started my return trip home. I took the bus from Honnjngsvåg to Alta following the same roads I cycled just two days ago. It was a weird feeling to just lay back and relax when the bus climbed the slopes with just a push of the drivers foot.

Now it is time to start relaxation. The tour slowly comes to an end.

Mission completed

At 3:02 pm I arrived at the North Cape. 3,673 kilometres from home I am happy, exhausted and thankful for the opportunity of this tour. I was not easy but always interesting. There is nothing I want to miss or change because the tour would not have been the same without any of all these small things.

I am happy that I did the tour and succeeded in my attempt to reach the North Cape.

Exhaustion is caused by physical activity of which I had some in the last weeks. But now there is enough time for recreation.

Thankful I am because I had such great support through my family, my company FleishmanHillard, my healthcare team and all my friends. No one ever doubted that I would do the tour. Everyone had been supportive and helpful.

And last but no means least to my dear cycling shop owner Mr. Mauer. He helped me to avoid major technical damages.

Auf direktem Weg zum Kap

149 km I 0:10:34 I 3.582 km I 9:08:15 I Alta – Repvåg

Just one day left

Today had been the perfect day.

Everything went smooth and easy. Even the weather plaid into my plans. It was overcast in the morning and got better towards the evening with blue sky. More and more cyclist are to be seen. Some return from the cape and provide details about the cape itself. Others are on their way to the cape. But here is nearly no tourist that is not related to the cape in one or the other way. Buses bring loads of people. Some tourist bus drivers sell food from home to their passengers. Looks a little weird especially when a Norwegian drugstore is a few meters away.

Tomorrow I will get to the North Cape. Than I have achieved my goal to do the journey from Bad Homburg to the North Cape by bicycle on my own. Will be interesting to see how much money was donated.

Talking to you soon from the Cape.

Der Countdown hat begonnen

126 km I 0:07:34 I 3.262 km I 8:10:32 I Tromsö – Sandnes

Getting closer

Today the Arctic showed two of it’s many faces. All morning the sun warmed my back when cycling east towards Alta. I departed from Tromsø with a slight delay due to a short sightseeing tour that Michael gave me. It was fun to see the city again after so many years. This vivid city that is still the port of call for many polar adventures and expeditions. I took the chance and had a photo taken with Amundsen.

image

He was very successful and not only conquered the South Pole but also was the first one to ship the North West Passage from Greenland to Alaska. He was a dedicated person but no great leader as my favourite polar hero Sir Ernest Shackelton. Another story to tell elsewhere.

My cycling today got me much closer to Alta. I did my last ferry trips and got back to the lovely E6 motorway. Keep fingers crossed that it stays as quite as it was today. This road is the only connect to the most northern cities in Norway and therefore heavily used. Until the day after tomorrow I will be bound to this road as there are no real alternatives. I had worse roads to ride.

The trip is getting to an end and I already start to miss this travelling attitude with all the smaller and bigger encounters and events every day. It is so much fun to get to know a country like Norway just by cycling. There is so much more to see. I am already planning for another visit. But this is another story. Let me call it a day for now. See you.

Treffen in Tromsö

97 km I 0:06:22 I 3.136 km I 8:02:58 I Andenes – Tromsö

image

Tunnels and climbs

image

Cycling today was a sweaty business today. The island Senja challenged my nerves and muscles with all the climbs. Even before I got into the various tunnels I most often had to climb a slope first.

The funny thing had been the signs in front of these tunnels. They were to warn the traffic that cyclists are in the tunnel. But first I had to push a button to start the warning lights. It is the very first time that I have seen these signs. What made me laugh was the fact that the buttons were very difficult to reach from the road. For pushing the button cyclists would have to get of their bikes and walk over to the signs. Not very pragmatic. Nevertheless it helped me keeping up my good spirit that I really needed today with the very hilly grounds of Senja. But it did not rain which I appreciated a lot. Had been more fun to cycle without my rain gear.
